Welcome Message from the Chair

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

It is my distinct honour and privilege to welcome you to the Seminar of Surgical Movement Disorders, organized by the 2nd Neurosurgery Clinic of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

As we gather at the AKISA Building, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment in the field of functional neurosurgery. The landscape of neuromodulation is evolving rapidly, driven by advancements in imaging, genetics, and technology. Our scientific program this year has been meticulously curated to mirror the patient’s journey, dedicating specific sessions to the critical stages “Before”, “Peri-operative”, and “After” the operation.

We are particularly proud to present a comprehensive agenda that explores Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) beyond Parkinson’s disease, including emerging indications such as epilepsy, OCD, Tourette syndrome, and depression. A key highlight of our meeting is the exploration of the convergence of neurosurgery and neuroscience, specifically through the lens of Clinical Brain-Computer Interfaces, which promises to redefine how we restore agency to our patients. We will conclude the day with a vital Round Table discussion. This session will address the future directions of DBS therapy for the next five years, focusing on the creation of a DBS registry, navigating budget constraints, and the ambitious goal of establishing a National Center for Neuromodulation and Epilepsy.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to our distinguished faculty—both from Greece and abroad—who have come to Athens to share their expertise. I also thank our sponsors and the organizations providing their auspices, including the Athens Medical School and the Hellenic Neurological Society, for their invaluable support.

I am confident that this seminar will provide fertile ground for the exchange of ideas, fostering collaborations that will ultimately improve the quality of life for our patients.
I wish you a productive and inspiring meeting.
